Suicide Prevention, Postvention and Awareness

The Ministry of Children and Youth Services awarded a grant to Windsor-Essex County in 2013-2014. A small committee of interested agencies and school boards came together to begin planning on behalf of our community. In 2014, the Committee focused on three key objectives:

  1. Develop an environmental scan of the Windsor- Essex County community
    • describing level of need (which we know is significant)
    • current prevention activities
    • current services and pathways to these services
    • gaps in prevention and responses to crisis and follow up services
  2. Enhance Collaboration
    • proposed improvements to pathways and collaborative responses with existing resources
    • proposed new services and pathways
    • do an environmental scan, write proposals regarding pathways for response and for future services needed
  3. Build Professional Capacity and knowledge
    • An environmental scan surveying Windsor-Essex County’s existing services and supports and readiness to become involved in a collaborative suicide prevention initiative including the next steps and strategies was completed.
    • Additional interested community partners were identified.
    • 200 laminated double sided, wall charts titled, Youth: Suicide Assessment and Community Referral identifying the available crisis, urgent and non-urgent services available to youth up to the age of 18 years were created and distributed.
    • 2800 Double sided, laminated wallet resource cards for primary care providers to hand to families and youth as well as other care providers were created and distributed.
    • A community structure (committee) was established amongst a group of key stakeholders that will serve to support the ongoing sharing of resources and knowledge towards Suicide Prevention.
    • There was an improved sense of shared commitment across the sectors.
    • 40 participants were certified in ASIST of whom, 25 are front line CYWs in the Greater Essex County District School Board.
    • 60 participants were certified in safe TALK suicide alertness training.
    • A small group of clinicians (6) attended Dr. Turecki’s presentation on the Suicidal Brain

In 2015, the Committee continues to work towards its goal of preventing youth suicide and increasing awareness regarding the issue in our community. The Committee, will continue to focus on enhancing collaboration targeting the involvement of addition key stakeholders and is taking steps to develop/sustain our professional capacity and level of knowledge.

Some of the activities will include:

  • Train minimum of 10 professionals as Trainers in Safe Talk
  • Train high school students in all of 4 local interested Boards of Education in safeTALK
  • Develop follow up supports for these youth
  • Update and issue to doctors, professional, school personnel the chart outlining where to go given level of severity of presenting issue
  • Devise an app which can be downloaded to phones re indicators and resources
  • Pursue consultation from The Police, Multicultural Council, Funeral Home Directors and the Media
  • Carry out Communications, coordination and documentation of above activities
